THE BOYRACER EP
2003 Lil' Chief Records

reviewed by Hugh Owens

The Brunettes are here to save indie-pop I tells ya!!! Stunningly idiosyncratic live, they build upon a percussive, rhythmic pulse, reminiscent of the Slits, with Heather's bright-eyed-bushy-tailed vocals often sounding akin to an antipodean Life Without Buildings. All the while the boys in the band dish out some of the lovelier 4-part harmonies this side of CSN&Y. And they look straight out of an Archie comic. Cool. The Boyracer EP doesn't quite scale the heights of the live Brunettes experience, but still stands on its own two feet especially as a document of the group's ability to pen great bubblegum pop tunes like 'I Miss My Coochie Coo' and 'Lovers Park'. Expectations already high for album two. Bring it on. [8/10]
